My name is Kema Abrehet Tewodros, (keh-ma a-breh-het teh-wuh-dros), and my name is an integral piece to my artistic identity. I am of both Ethiopian and Eritrean descent, and both identities find their way into my art through language, style, and themes. My work explores cultural connection, African spirituality, and revisiting past experiences through the use of organic shapes, nature-centered imagery, and handcrafted canvases. I typically use wood, raw canvas, gouache and acrylic paints in my work to convey a grounded, natural feel. My goal in my work is to share a Pan-African perspective and build community.
My vision as an artist pertains to my cultural identity as an Ethiopian-Eritrean American, spirituality, and reminiscence. This is often-times what my ‘storytelling’ draws from, my culture through language, as well as past experiences. Through my work, I aim to convey feelings of ትዝታ teh-zih-tah (nostalgia).
